Some of the must-visit attractions in Pirenópolis include its beautiful old town, numerous waterfalls around the city, traditional farms and conservation areas with sustainable experiences. There are a couple of museums and theatres too that are well worth visiting.

Old Town

A walk by the Historical Center of Pirenópolis getting to know the attractions and culture such as the churches, museums, streets, tourist service center, house of the candy and workmanship, shops and studios of local artists.

Our Lady of the Rosary Mother Church (Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora do Rosário)
Completed in 1732, this is the oldest and biggest historical monument in Goiás and attracts a lot of visitors. Almost destroyed in a fire in 2002, the church reopened in 2006 after extensive renovation.

Our Lord of Bonfim Church (Igreja Nosso Senhor do Bonfim)
Dating back to 1750, Our Lord of Bonfim Church has beautiful altars and holds an image of Senhor do Bonfim brought from Portugal.

Our Lady of Carmo Church (Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo)

Built by the Portuguese in 1750, Our Lady of Carmo Church is now also a Sacred Arts museum.

Cavalhadas Museum

Located on Rua Direita, 39, this museum displays amazing festival costumes including ornate metal armours and a variety of masks from the Cavalhadas, one of the most important popular festivals in the Central Brasil.

Família Pompeo Museum
Located at Rua Nova, this museum presents an interesting collection of traditional furniture and home objects those retracts the local people way of life.

Pirenópolis Theatre
One of the oldest cultural centres in Goiás, the Pirenópolis Theatre was built in 1899 and has been the venue for many plays over the years. Once privately owned, it was for long a cinema, a saw mill, and a furniture factory all rolled into one. Taken over by the state Cultural Foundation since 1979, the theatre recently underwent extensive modernisation.
Natural Reserves and Waterfalls
The numerous waterfalls around town are a big tourist attraction. Some of them are enormous and spectacular while others form beautiful lakes at the bottom and sand beaches. The waters are invariably pristine and a few have visitor's centres, bathrooms, restaurants and craft shops attached to them. Many of the waterfalls are located on private property and a fair fee is charged.

The most popular waterfalls are not the best, and some of them have to be avoided. The best places to visit are Vagafogo Wildlife Sanctuary (8km), Santa Maria and Lázaro Waterfalls (12km), Abade Waterfalls (17km), Rosário Waterfall (35km), Dragões Waterfalls (40 km) comprises seven waterfalls and the Pireneus Mountains State Park (20km).



Vagafogo Wildlife Sanctuary (8km - R$10,00)
Created in 1990 to promote environmental education, ecotourism, and the sustainable output of produce. Located 6 km northwest of town, offers a self-guided hike along a private reserve. It is a great place to spot monkeys, armadillos, agoutis, toucans and over 200 species of birds.

The path displays centennial trees of the forest that border the Vagafogo River, where we can refresh ourselves in a natural swimming pool and savor the crystal-clear waters of a small waterfall. . A visitors' centre provides information and publications on environment conservation. It also stock farm produce and fruits for sale. You can try a ridiculously good brunch, that offers more than 45 items, including breads, meats, savory and sweet snacks, and beverages, all produced from Cerrado fruits grown on the farm. You can also venture the canopy walk, an unforgettable and safety experience on the top of trees.

Santa Maria & Lázaro Waterfalls (12km - R$ 15,00)
The Vargem Grande Natural Reserve is a farm that was transformed into a private natural park structured to receive visitors that love nature. The visitors can walk in paths in the forest to get to know the Santa Maria & Lázaro Waterfalls, perfects for a revitalizing dive surrounded by pretty beach of white sand.

Abade Waterfalls (17km - R$ 10,00)

The Abade falls is the highest and one of the most beautiful waterfalls of Pireneus Mountain Range. Has structured visitor center with toilets and location for its easy snacks, and paved trails lead to main falls, with 22m free-fall surrounded by a splendid white sand beach. Other small tracks invite you to enjoy the beautiful natural swimming pools formed by the Rio das Almas. In addition to contemplation and relaxation, the place offers adventure tourism practices, such as rappel and canyoning.

Ecocentro IPEC (3km - R$ 15,00)
The Institute of Permaculture and Ecovillage of the Cerrado (IPEC), was created in 1998 and is a laboratory and school of clean technologies and practical solutions for the present problems of humanity: dwelling, safe food production, use of the water, energy, etc.

Pireneus Mountains State Park (20km - free)
This park created in 1987 encloses 2,833 hectares of pristine Cerrado vegetation, striking rock formations and exotic life forms in the Pireneus Mountain Range area. Located about 20 km from Pirenópolis, the park is full of colorful lichens, cacti, moss and many species of orchids that thrive on the rocky landscape. Animals found here include Cerrado otters, anteaters, deer, jaguars, wild cats, eagles and seriemas. There are a number of waterfalls along the way and the outlying areas offers ideal trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.

Babilônia Farm (26km - R$ 10,00)

Babilônia Farm is a must visit location. Dating back to the 18th century when it was a sugar mill, the farm now has a large plantation house, a museum and a chapel, maintained by the National Artistic and Historical Patrimony. Visitors to the farm are treated to a colonial breakfast (R$ 25,00).
