Journey to the Center of the Earth

Duration: 7 day(s) - Location: Buila Vanturarita Natural Park

The Buila Vanturarita caves are natural wonders nested in the southern range of the Carpathian Mountains.

This exploration journey combines outdoor adventures such as hiking, bird watching and tent accommodation under clear skies, with spectacular views of the underworld.

6 caves await the traveler for a wild and challenging expedition that provides instruction and experience in basic rock climbing while navigating through this amazing underground
environment. No previous climbing experience is necessary.

In the North-Eastern part of Buila Vanturarita National Park, the rivers Cheia and Olanesti carved Comarnicelor Gorges one of the deepest and wildest in the country, with 1 km of waterfalls, erosion holes, steps, walls as narrow as 2 m and as tall as 300 m, and respectively Mânzului Gorges. In this magnificent area join us to explore beautiful marble and crystal filled chambers, climb waterfalls, see ancient fossils and squeeze through some tight passages.

Living Caves: All of the Buila Vanturarita caves are alive, meaning the formations, which
result when minerals are deposited by dripping water, are still changing.

Some of the caves are dry, but most of them are wet sheltering unique wildlife such as bats.

Inside temperatures, although varying from cave to cave, remain the same year-round, usually ranging from 8 to 12 degrees.

While exploring the Buila Vanturarita caves, you can enjoy:
  • Limestone stones, slopes and horns views and climbing
  • Unique and protected flower habitats such as the lion's foot
  • Wildlife watching
  • Visits to the sheepfolds around the area
 Itinerary

Day 1: Travel Airport - Cheia - One of our colleagues will pick you up from the airport and drive you all the way to Olanesti spa. At around noon we will be in the village Cheia, which is at the border of the Buila Vanturarita national park. From here we hike for about 3 hours until we reach our first camping destination near the Pahomie Hermitage.

Day 2: Early in the morning we start our trip to the first cave of the massif: the Pahomie Cave. After a short break, we continue our way for a few hours hiking until we reach the beautiful Ridge and the Ştevioara Saddle. On our way we stop at the Ştevioara Sheepfold to rest and eat fresh cheese. We camp for the night at the Ştevioara Saddle.

Day 3: Visit a beautiful cave in our way to Cantonul Silvic. We enjoy the amazing landscape as we are crossing the Vanturarita ridge. This day is dedicated to complete enjoyment, animal and bird observation. Later in the evening we head to our overnight location.

Day 4&5: The most spectacular part of the journey begins as we reach the Comarnicelor Gorges. In this area breathtaking valleys hide unspoiled caves. We venture beneath discovering the Lacul Verde, Pestera Pagodelor and Comarnicelor caves.
These caves are rich in underground fauna, stalagmites and fossils of the spalaeus bear.

Day 6: We head to the Manzului Gorges and the Arnautilor cave which shelters a number of small pretty lakes. From here we continuously head down-hill enjoying the silence of the forest and campsite cooking.

Day 7: We reach the Olanesti Spa, where we stop for a short visit and a fine meal. A private bus will bring you to the airport.

Things to see & do in Ephesus and Izmir

Izmir Bird’s Paradise
Izmir Bird's Paradise is a bird sanctuary in Çiğli near Karşıyaka. The sanctuary is spread over 80 square kilometres and is home to 205 species of birds. About 56 of these species have been bred in the sanctuary, 30 species are birds in transit, 54 species are migratory birds of summer, 43 species are winter migratory birds, and 63 species are domestic birds. In February 1982, the Ministry of Forestry registered the sanctuary as ‘the protected area for water birds and for their breeding'.

The Kadifekale or the ‘Velvet Fortress' stands on the hill it is named after. It is an old castle built in the fourth century BC. Legend states that after Alexander the Great defeated the Persians in 334 BC, he marched to Ephesus and reached Izmir. Here he received a divine order to rebuild the city of Smyrna (today's Izmir) in Kadifekale.

The view from Kadifekale is stunning. The massive walls and towers of the fortress merge the foundations of earlier structures from the Byzantine, Genoese, Ottoman, and Roman periods. A Roman theatre and stadium with a seating capacity of 20,000 once stood on the slopes of the hill. The tomb of St. Polycarp is believed to lie here too.
The Town Hall or Beladiye is in Konak Square. It is an impressive modern building which houses many businesses. The Ataturk Caddesi lies behind the Town Hall. It is a wide two mile long promenade along the bay and it affords a spectacular view of the gulf.

The Konak Mosque is located in the square as well. It is a small mosque with a single minaret and is beautifully tiled. To the southeast of the mosque is the Archaeological Museum that houses many fascinating exhibits.

The Cultural Centre of the Aegean University is located in another part of the square.

Shopping in China - Hotels and Shopping Tips

Shopping in China - Hotels and Shopping Tips

      Shopping in China

A visit to China must include a lot of time for shopping as it can be as interesting as the sightseeing in the country’s ancient cultural sites. Chinese goods such as silk, jade, porcelain, antiques, curios and, of course, Chinese tea should be on the must-buy list of all visitors.
Shopping in China offers a special something for every taste. Each product is delicately crafted and will prove a great topic during evening-dinner-party conversations for many years to come!
Fill your suitcase while Shopping in China. Read on and we will tell you all you need to know to get the best deals and learn about the best places to shop in China. If you get hungry during your shopping spree, stop for some finger food or relax in one of the Restaurants in China.

      Chinese Silk is exquisite

Chinese silk is likely on the top of every visitor’s shopping list. The Chinese were the first to rear silkworms and produce this luxurious and wondrous material. With each dynasty, unique styles of embroidery and brocade were incorporated in the production of silk. For instance, the Shu brocade originated during the Han dynasty and the Yun Brocade originated during the Yuan dynasty. Hangzhou Brocade, Sichuan Brocade, Suzhou Figured Satin and Crepe Silk, and Dandong Tussah Silk are the most typical varieties to look out for. The embroideries from Jiangsu, Hunan, Guangdong and Sichuan provinces are very popular.

The export of silk to Europe also opened up the Silk Route and it was a major import of the Roman Empire. This was when Emperor Wu Di of the western Han Dynasty decided to promote trade with other countries. Today, the Suzhou and Hangzhou regions produce high quality silk as the natural conditions in these areas are favourable for growth of silkworms and mulberry cultivation.

Perhaps the most well known drink - Chinese Tea

Another first from China is the cultivation and consumption of tea. Tea first originated in the south-western region of China and even today 2,700-year-old wild tea trees can be found here. There are eight classes of Chinese Tea – Green Tea, Red Tea, Black Tea, White Tea, Oolong Tea, Yellow Tea, Flower Tea and Compressed Tea.

The most popular teas in Chinese markets are Pilochun Tea, Qihong Tea, Yuanfeng Tea, Dahongpao Tea, Jasmine Tea, Silver Needle Tea, and Tieguanyin Tea.

For the Chinese, tea drinking is an important aspect of their culture. So do indulge in the wonderful variety of teas available in China.

      Chinese Alcoholic Beverages

Chinese alcoholic drinks are distinctive from those available in other countries. After a drink or two a visitor gets accustomed to its unique flavour. Chinese alcohol has a complicated method of production and it is fermented from broomcorn, corn, rice and wheat. Chinese alcoholic beverages are classified into four types: Yellow wine, Fruit wine, White or Clear Spirits, and Beer.

Yellow wine is so called because of its yellow colour and lustre. It is made from rice or sticky rice and its alcohol content varies from 10 to 15%. Fruit wine is fermented using various fruits such as grapes, pears, oranges, hawthorn berries, litchis, sugarcane, and waxberries. Grape wines are, however, the most popular. White or Clear Spirits are derived from wine and spirits to which fragrances from fruits, herbs or flowers are added. Beer production started rather late in China, in the early 20th century. Today, beer production is also a thriving industry.

Several brands of alcoholic beverages have made it to the market and some of the popular ones are Shaoxing Yellow Wine, Maotai Liquor of Guizhou, Tsindao Beer, Fen Liquor of Shanxi, Wuliangye Liquor of Sichuan, Gold Prize Brandy, Shacheng White Wine of Hebei and Minquan White Wine of Henan.

      Weather in Oman

Find out the latest temperatures in Oman with our six-day Muscat weather forecast below. It will help in planning your Oman holiday.

The summer season in Oman starts by the middle of April and lasts till October. The average temperature in Oman during the summer is around 33° Celsius. But sometimes a strong western wind called ‘gharbi’ blows in from Rub al Khali and raises the temperatures in the towns of the Gulf of Oman by about 6° to 10° Celsius. The interior regions of Oman experience the highest temperatures, with the barometer rising above 50° Celsius in the shade. Summer temperatures on the plains of Al Batinah rarely go beyond 46° Celsius but due to its low elevation, the humidity levels are almost as high as 90%.
Winters in Oman are pleasant and mild with the temperatures remaining between 15° Celsius and 23° Celsius. The rainfall in the mountains (especially over Al Jabal Al Akhdar) is significantly higher and could even go beyond 700 millimetres. Despite this high rainfall, vegetation in the region is sparse because much of the rainwater seeps through the porous limestone plateau of Al Jabal Al Akhdar. A large reservoir under the Al Jabal Al Akhdar plateau provides water to the low lying areas. The area is also rendered fertile by a huge wadi (a dry river bed that becomes a channel for rainwater to flow). Dhofar is the most fertile area of Oman owing to the heavy southwest monsoon during June – September, which give rise to perennial streams.

      Weather in Muscat

For most of the year, Muscat experiences hot, dry weather thanks to its location in the south-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Summer temperatures in Oman are excruciatingly hot, shooting up to 46 °C in coastal areas. Temperatures in the interior of the country, though, are a few notches even higher! Muscat’s mean summer temperature is 33 °C. Its low elevation results not only in hot Muscat weather but also high humidity levels, going up to 90 per cent.
Winter, from October to March, is an extremely pleasant season. The weather in Muscat is sunny and cool, an ideal time for visitors. Temperatures in Muscat at this time vary between 15 °C and 23 °C.
Generally speaking, rainfall in Muscat is erratic and rarely heavy, averaging around 75 mm in a year. However, there are occasions when thunderstorms and heavy rain in the mountains have resulted rainwater washing down the slopes and causing flash flooding in the valley.

      Transportation in China

Considering the large area of China – over nine million square kilometres, it is a challenge for anyone who wishes to see this country as much as possible. Thankfully transportation in the country is well developed and allows you to cover large distances comfortably – a far cry from the times when people travelled by foot and took months to reach their respective capitals to appear for the imperial exam to become part of the government.

Today the country has an enviable transportation system. An aggressive approach by the Chinese government since 1949 has resulted in development of superior infrastructure covering all modes of transportation – from railways to air travel and from highway travel to water transportation. From 1950 to 1998, the available railway lines have increased from 21,800 km to 57,600 km. Whilst International airlines link China to 58 international cities. The staff is also efficient and matches up to international standards and speak both English and Mandarin.
Hop on the plane then and travel to China - the land where time is harnessed by bright ideas, galloping technology and fabled story tellers!
Transportation in China will tell you all you need to know about travelling in and around China. Use our China Destination Guide or click on our China Country Guide if you want to know more about travelling to and within magnificent China.

      To China by Air

Airlines in China provide safe and good quality service for travellers to China. The aviation industry comes under the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), which successfully operates around 1,000 domestic airlines covering 140 cities. Beijing is central to these airlines. Besides domestic flights there are 130 international airlines which take you to over 40 countries. China’s international airlines offer rates which are very competitive and they are always lower than other foreign international air companies.

China’s major airports are all equipped with superior facilities and even the smaller airports in provinces have recently been modernized and made efficient. These airports may be closer to the smaller towns and reaching here could give you an instant introduction to the ‘real China’. Air China has the distinction of being one of the safest air companies in the world.

Currently an airport tax of 90 yuan, payable in cash, is levied on passengers who are departing from any of the international airports in the People's Republic of China. However, passengers holding diplomatic passports, transit passengers who stop over for less than 24 hours, and children under the age of 12 are exempt from paying the airport fee. Flights to Hong Kong and Macau are also treated as international flights.

For passengers with a first class ticket, the free luggage allowance is 40 kg and it is 30kg for a business class ticket, and 20kg for an economy class ticket. Babies have to pay 10 percent of the adult fair and are not given any free luggage allowance.

      To China by Train

Trains are a popular mode of transport as they are 25% less expensive than airfares. Depending on your budget you can opt for one of the four classes of seats available. The categories available are soft-sleeper, soft-seat, hard-sleeper and hard-seat.

Hard seats are the least expensive and contrary to what the name implies, these seats are upholstered, except that these seats are crowded and not always very clean. Soft seats are more comfortable as they are less crowded and have plenty of leg room. The hard sleeper carriage consists of compartments which have beds in three tiers on each side. So each doorless compartment can accommodate six passengers. Sheets and pillows are provided on the train. Soft sleepers have just two tiers and the sheets and blankets provided are also good. However, this comes at a charge and the fares are often as much as the airfare to the destination.

Dining cars are present in trains which travel very long distances. Toilets are not very hygienic and it makes sense to carry your own toilet paper.

      China City Buses and Taxis

Chinese urban transportation is very convenient and offers an array of public buses, tour buses and taxis. While buses can get crowded, taxis are perhaps the best way to get around. The fare is metered and depends on the distance. Taxis will charge you extra for waiting and a taxi will charge you an extra 20 percent above the basic fare after 11 pm. Minibuses also run the route of public buses. They successfully alleviate the pressure caused on bus transportation during peak hours. The tickets cost a little more than those on a regular bus service.

A Guide to China and its Cities – Visit China

A Guide to China and its Cities – Visit China

      Beijing, the thriving Capital CityTop
Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, is a municipality governed directly by the Chinese government. Chinese civilizations took birth in these areas and Beijing has been the capital for the last 3000 years, spanning several Chinese dynasties. It is also one of the six ancient capitals of China. With thousands of years of history behind it, Beijing is predictably on the itinerary of every visitor to China.

A first look at Beijing presents a modern city with skyscrapers and a stylish population that is familiar with the latest mobile phone technology and MTV. A far cry from the Maoist inclined population a first-time visitor has in mind. However, Beijing is an exception and hardly a representative of the rest of the country. Within the city itself you will need to scratch the surface to see its more personal and cherished side.

Beijing has the best food and nightlife China can offer. It is a good idea to stay in Beijing and visit other places nearby. There are several short trips you can take from Beijing. The city of Chengde, situated north-east of Beijing, is an interesting place to visit. Chengde, a mountain resort, was chosen by the Kangxi Emperor as his summer resort and boasts of some impressive imperial buildings. Close to Beijing are some coastal town retreats like Shanhaiguan and Beidaihe, where today's Beijing residents take a break from their daily life.

      Famous tourist attractions in ChinaTop
Yellow River Valley: The Chinese civilization began with settlements near the Yellow river and became the dominant culture of China. Remnants of the Neolithic period are scattered over this landscape.

Cave Temples at Datong and Luoyang: The Yungang Caves are located west of Datong and have magnificent Buddhist grotto art. South of Luoyang City is the Longmen Cave Temple. These first appeared during the Northern Wei Dynasty.

Terracotta Army at X'ian: The Terracotta warriors and horses were discovered as late as 1974 by local farmers near X'ian in the Shaanxi province and are considered the most noteworthy archaeological excavation of the 20th century. The warriors were built to stand guard over the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang.

Ancient Towns of China: There are other less known ancient towns such as Kaifeng in Henan (one of the ancient capitals of China), which has attractions such as Tie Ta, the Iron Pagoda and Qufu, the birthplace of Confucius in Shandong Province. It also has the cemetery of Confucius and the Kong Family Mansion, where the descendents of Confucius lived.

      Tai Shan:
Since time immemorial the Tai Shan Mountain has been an important pilgrimage centre for the Chinese. The Taoists consider it a sacred mountain and believe it acts as a connection between heaven and earth. The Chinese pay homage at this site even today.

Song Shan: The Son Shan Mountain in Henan sees a different type of pilgrim - these pilgrims visit the famous Shaolin Temple where the art of kung-fu originated.

      Wutai Shan in Shanxi:
This is also known as the Five Terrace Mountain and has been a predominantly Buddhist pilgrimage site for over 2000 years. It is a very well maintained religious site in the country.

Central China is home to beautiful sceneryTop
Central China is known for its scenic beauty. It forms a basin around the central regions of Asia's longest river, the Yangtze. It was once the principle transport route and provided regular ferry rides for passengers on this great river. The provinces in Anhui, Hubei Jiangxi and Hunan are farmed extensively by the waters of two huge freshwater lakes, Poyang and Donting, which are found upstream of the Yangtze. There are a number of busy riverside ports including Wuhan, a modern commercial centre of finance, industry, trade and science. It is also a corporate and a transportation hub.

Central China's link with the past includes two thousand-year-old tombs and third-century battlefields and the Hunanese village of Shaoshan, which is Mao Zedong's birthplace. Other places worth a visit are the Huang Shan peaks in Anhui, clothed in clouds and dotted with pine trees, and Hubei's Wudang Shan Mountain, which has many Taoist temples. The Hunan's Wulingyuan Scenic Reserve has spectacular scenery and includes the Zhangjiajie National Park, Suoxiyu Nature Reserve and Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve.

Telephone services in China are readily available, obviously better in the cities rather than regional areas; however you will find that making international phone calls from China is sometimes easier than making calls internally. Usually, there is a 3 minute minimum charge for international calls. Domestic calls are usually cheaper to make between 9pm & 7am and will often find that the connections are also better during this time.

You will find that most major cities and urban areas have mobile phone coverage, but coverage in other parts of the country is often sporadic.

      Emergency numbers in China are:

      Police: 110
      Fire: 119
      Emergency: 120

Internet is a resource that is available in many areas of China and is growing fast. Most major cities are home to numerous internet cafes and coverage can be found in many areas of China. The Chinese government routinely blocks access of its citizens to certain sites and subjects, such as the human rights group Falun Gong, as well as some foreign news agencies.

If you are looking to send items via post overseas, regular services to Europe can take anywhere from a couple of days to 1 week. Most larger tourist hotels usually have their own post offices. Post offices are usually open between 8am & 7pm.
Chinese Money is called Renminbi (RMB - which means People's Currency). The popular unit of RMB is Yuan. Chinese currency is issued in the following denominations: 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 and a 100 Yuan; 1, 2 and 5 Jiao; and 1, 2 and 5 Fen. There are parts of China the Yuan is also known as Kuai and Jiao is known as Mao.

To view the current Chinese exchange rate, this can be seen by visiting OANDA.com.

      Visas/ Passport Information Top
Foreigners travelling to China first need to apply for a visa at the Chinese embassy or consulate in their home country. Depending on the status of your passport and the purpose of your visit to China, Chinese authorities will issue the specific visa. Diplomatic visas, tourist visas, transit visas, business visit visas, student visas and work visas are issued depending on the category the visitor falls in. A separate journalist visa is also issued to journalists.

China has also signed agreements with 64 countries on Mutual Visa Exemption. Normally the mutually visa-free agreements allow a stay of less than 30 days. The basic documents necessary for a Chinese visa are a valid passport, completed visa application form along with a recent 2-inch (4cm x 6cm) full-face photograph and visa processing fee.

To visit Tibet, you will need consent from the Tibet Tourism Administration before you are issued a valid visa. To visit China’s five special economic zones – which include Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Shantou in Guangdong Province, Xiamen in east China's, Fujian Province and southern China's Hainan Province.

If you are entering China in your own vehicle (be it a cycle, motorcycle, car or aircraft), prior approval is mandatory. If a visitor wants to extend his/her stay beyond the approved term, then permission from the local security organization is required for the extension.

US citizens who do not wish to go through the trouble of dealing with the red tape themselves can count on the professional services of Travel Visa Pro to speed things up: Apply for China Visa Online (service starts from $39). Lijiang Transportation Guide

        Getting to Lijiang

You can board buses at the bus station which is situated south of the old city. Bus # 11 will take you to the Old Town. You can ask to get off at Baixing supermarket. The other way to get to the Old Town is to take a taxi.
The airport is a 40-minute ride by taxi and will set you back by 80RMB/CNY (Renminbi is the official currency in China). The airport booking office provides buses for passengers to travel to and from the Old Town and the bus timings are set to suit flight timings. The Lijiang airport operates about a dozen flights a day.

        By air

Lijiang Airport (LJG), about 28 km (17.4 miles) south of Lijiang is situated at an altitude of about 7357.6 feet. Built in 1995, LJG is one of the busiest moderate-sized airports in Yunnan Province. From here, travellers can connect to Kunming, Beijing, Xishuangbanna, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guizhou, Guangzhou, Guiyang and Shenzhen. However, most tourists choose to fly first to Kunming and then to Lijiang or take the bus from Kunming to Lijiang. The much bigger Kunming Wujiaba International Airport offers international services and a wide range of domestic flights.

From Lijiang Airport, you can get to the city by taxi or airport shuttle bus. These buses will take you to the civil aviation ticket office in the Lantian Hotel from where you can take a taxi to the Old Town. The trip to the hotel from the airport takes about half an hour. You can also travel to the Old Town from the airport by taxi.
The Kunming Wujiaba International Airport operates several domestic and international flights. From Lijiang Airport you can take either a taxi or a shuttle bus to the city. The shuttle buses can be boarded at the Lantian Hotel civil aviation ticket office in the city. The shuttle buses charge around CNY15 per head. Once in the city you will want to go to the Old Town which will take you half an hour by bus. A taxi will charge you CNY10 for this trip. A taxi ride from the airport directly to the Old Town will cost you CNY80.

        By long-distance bus

Popular vote says that it is most convenient to travel to Lijiang city by bus. Being located at the interface of Tibet, Sichuan province and Yunnan, the highways are well connected and developed. So visitors find it easy to travel between destinations like Shangri-La, Kunming, and Dali by road. Buses operate daily between Lijiang and Panzhihua of Sichuan Province.
Passengers can board buses at any of the four coach stations that have been set up for scheduled long-distance buses.

        By city-bus

Increased tourist traffic has been an incentive for Lijiang's city buses to provide better service in the recent years. Buses run on several routes, connecting all corners of the new city. The fares charged range from CNY0.5 to CNY1. Bus # 7 that leaves from Hongtaiyang Square in the north of the Old Town takes passengers to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Bus # 8 runs a circular route, with its starting point at the department store. Vehicles are not allowed into the Old Town.

        By taxi

Around one thousand taxis operate in Lijiang city. There are both small taxis and larger taxis known as Santana taxis. The small taxis charge CNY6 for the first three kilometres and then CNY1.6 per kilometre travelled. The Santana taxis charge CNY7 for the first 3 kilometres and then CNY1.8 for the additional ones. Inside urban areas fares are open to bargaining. For travelling outside the city you will find it cheaper to rent a car. Rental cars in Lijiang, however, become scarce during the peak tourist season.

        By bicycle

You can do your sightseeing on rented bicycles too. Several places where is close to old town, A li ba ba and Peter's cafe in Red Sun Square rent out bicycles, charging CNY15~CNY20 for the day. Taking a Lijiang Bicycle tour is a great, environmentally friendly way to see the best of Lijiang.
