The Sveti Stefan peninsula is acknowledged as one of nature's most brilliant gifts to the country of Montenegro. According to local legend, a tribe by the name of Pastrovici built their homes on the peninsula in the 15th century with some captured Turkish treasure. Modern day Sveti Stefan offers a range of hotels, villas and apartments, all with glorious views of the sea. The peninsula has a diverse cultural and historical heritage left by Sveti Stefan's original residents. On both sides of the isthmus are two gorgeous beaches with reddish coloured sand.
Originally created by glaciers, the Durmitor National Park is stunningly beautiful and has a myriad network of underground streams and rivers. The park is home to the Tara River Canyon, the deepest gorge in all of Europe, where thick pine forests and lakes provide the perfect home to a large variety of local flora.

Durmitor National Park is a great place to visit in both winter and summer, as each season offers a unique glimpse of the mountains and lakes. The park is spread over 39,000 ha, of which 20,000 ha has been under UNESCO protection since the year 1980. The Balkans highest city, Zabljak, which is located at a height of 1456 m, is located in this region, and has twenty-three mountain tops over 2300 m high surrounding it.

Durmitor has 17 glacial lakes that are referred to as ‘mountain eyes' in the local area. The most famous of these is the Black Lake, which is covered with a layer of crystals and ice in the winter, but is the perfect place for swimming in the summer. Other spectacular lakes in the region are Barno, Zmijinje, Vrazje, Riblje, and Modro.

The highest peak of Montenegro, Bobotov Kuk, at a height of 2523 m, is also located here.

Stretching for 82 km, the Tara canyon is the second longest in the world and is 1300 m deep in some sections. The incredible scenery at Tara Canyon is complete with gorges, whirlpools, chasms, rocky formations, and forests that are many centuries old. Whether you plan to raft down the Tara River, spend a night in the midst of nature, or taste the local Montenegrin cuisine, you will realise that the world's best theme park attractions are no match for what nature has created in Montenegro.
As the largest lake in the Balkans, the Skadar Lake is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, and is also a significant habitat for water birds. With an average depth of 6m, the lake has some sections that are as deep as 60 m, which are referred to as ‘oka'. Skadar Lake's shores are picturesque and have many swamps, which are home to a vast collection of local fauna and flora.
There are several small islands in the lake called Goricas that are covered with wild pomegranate laurel and ivy. The lake has a rich history, with many cultural and historical monuments spread out across the park. The park's emblem is the rare curly pelican. The Ramasar convention of 1996 included Skadar Lake's swamps in its World list.
