Weather in Oman
Find out the latest temperatures in Oman with our six-day Muscat weather forecast below. It will help in planning your Oman holiday. The summer season in Oman starts by the middle of April and lasts till October. The average temperature in Oman during the summer is around 33° Celsius. But sometimes a strong western wind called ‘gharbi’ blows in from Rub al Khali and raises the temperatures in the towns of the Gulf of Oman by about 6° to 10° Celsius. The interior regions of Oman experience the highest temperatures, with the barometer rising above 50° Celsius in the shade. Summer temperatures on the plains of Al Batinah rarely go beyond 46° Celsius but due to its low elevation, the humidity levels are almost as high as 90%.
Winters in Oman are pleasant and mild with the temperatures remaining between 15° Celsius and 23° Celsius. The rainfall in the mountains (especially over Al Jabal Al Akhdar) is significantly higher and could even go beyond 700 millimetres. Despite this high rainfall, vegetation in the region is sparse because much of the rainwater seeps through the porous limestone plateau of Al Jabal Al Akhdar. A large reservoir under the Al Jabal Al Akhdar plateau provides water to the low lying areas. The area is also rendered fertile by a huge wadi (a dry river bed that becomes a channel for rainwater to flow). Dhofar is the most fertile area of Oman owing to the heavy southwest monsoon during June – September, which give rise to perennial streams.
Weather in Muscat
For most of the year, Muscat experiences hot, dry weather thanks to its location in the south-eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Summer temperatures in Oman are excruciatingly hot, shooting up to 46 °C in coastal areas. Temperatures in the interior of the country, though, are a few notches even higher! Muscat’s mean summer temperature is 33 °C. Its low elevation results not only in hot Muscat weather but also high humidity levels, going up to 90 per cent.
Winter, from October to March, is an extremely pleasant season. The weather in Muscat is sunny and cool, an ideal time for visitors. Temperatures in Muscat at this time vary between 15 °C and 23 °C.
Generally speaking, rainfall in Muscat is erratic and rarely heavy, averaging around 75 mm in a year. However, there are occasions when thunderstorms and heavy rain in the mountains have resulted rainwater washing down the slopes and causing flash flooding in the valley.
